Karl Lagasse, born in Paris in 1981, is a renowned French artist known for his innovative blend of sculpture, painting, and collage. He gained recognition early with his distinctive One Dollar sculptures, highlighting a minimalist artistic approach inspired by the United States.
Karl Lagasse is one of the most innovative and sought-after French artists of his generation. Born April 4, 1981 in Paris into a family of artists, he started creating collages at age 7 and met French sculptor César Baldaccini as a child, who encouraged him to pursue art. As a teenager, he created graffiti in the Parisian metro and met artist Yvaral Vasarely in 1998. He sold his first artwork at age 15 in Antwerp. After watching the film White Nights in 2004, he began sculpting and created his breakthrough One Dollar sculpture series in 2009 - lacquered aluminum interpretations of the American dollar bill in vibrant colors. In 2009, Artprice ranked him among the top 10 sculptors under 30 worldwide. He created a major sculpture for the 65th Cannes Film Festival in 2012, and in 2016, French President François Hollande personally congratulated him at Art Paris Art Fair for his monumental 2-meter One Dollar bronze sculpture. His monumental piece Cryptogram One symbolizes peace and love and is permanently installed at the entrance of Deauville, France. Lagasse has created the official trophy for the Deauville American Film Festival since 2017.
"My work represents what can be made with only one dollar and my admiration for the United States, exploring American iconography through pop art and sculpture with vibrant metallic finishes."
