Pierre Joseph is a seminal figure in French contemporary art born in 1965 in Caen, France, currently living and working in Paris. Alongside Philippe Parreno, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, and Bernard Joisten, he helped redefine aesthetic approaches in contemporary practice in the early 1990s. His breakthrough came with Personnages à réactiver (Characters to be reactivated, 1991-1997), a series inspired by video games and virtual reality that conceived exhibitions as spaces to inhabit or fictions experienced in real time. His practice explores themes of permanence, digital manipulation of reality, knowledge transmission, and the evolution of forms. He is more interested in producing situations than objects. Represented by Air de Paris gallery, Joseph is known as an artists artist and experimenter who never recreates the same work twice, making him a key reference for younger generations of French artists.
